How sexy is your toilet?  Before the 1950’s, the average toilet used a whopping 7 gallons of water per flush – not so sexy.  That number has decreased steadily over the years but it wasn’t until 1994 that it became law in the U.S for tanks to flush no more than 1.6 gallons (6 litres).  If your porcelain throne is considered an antique but you aren’t able to replace it anytime soon, you can cut back on some of the water waste by dropping a bag of sand into the tank.  The sand takes up space in place of the water leading to less water being used.  You can purchase sandbags at your local hardware store or make your own.  Alternatively, fill a plastic jug or bottle (label free) with pebbles and/or sand to weigh it down, fill the rest with water and drop in the tank.  Avoid putting bricks in the tank as they break down gradually and can cause headaches for you and your plumber.  Now you can get a little greener with every flush.
